Old Town of Lijiang, located in the ancient city of Lijiang, Yunnan Province, is also known as Dayan Town. It was built at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, with a history of more than 800 years. Surrounded by mountains and waters, the streets and lanes of the town follow the natural terrain, presenting a unique landscape of "small bridges, flowing water, and households." It is one of China's famous historical and cultural cities and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.  

1. Historical Development.The history of the Old Town of Lijiang can be traced back to the Tang and Song Dynasties, when it was called "Sanzangcheng" and was one of the earliest settlements of the Naxi people. During the Yuan Dynasty, the town became an important station on the Tea-Horse Road, and the Mu Family chieftains established their ruling center here, developing a unique political and cultural system. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Mu Family chieftains actively promoted culture and education, constructing landmarks such as the Mu Mansion and the Ten Thousand Volume Pavilion. They also absorbed the cultures of the Han, Tibetan, and Bai ethnic groups, fostering a blend of diverse cultures.  

2. Architectural Features.The architecture of the Old Town of Lijiang is characterized by "three sides and a screen wall" and "four courtyards with five skylights." The streets and lanes are paved with red gravel, and the layout follows the natural terrain, with rivers and canals flowing through every household. The town preserves one of the oldest urban water supply systems in the world, with a network of waterways that infuse the town with endless vitality. Si Fang Street is the heart of the town, radiating four main streets and two side streets, forming a layered and expanding structure that reflects the town's development from simplicity to complexity.  

3. Cultural Characteristics.The Old Town of Lijiang is the cultural core of the Naxi people, where Dongba culture is fully represented. Dongba script, the only pictographic writing system still in use today, and Dongba religion, as well as intangible cultural heritages such as Naxi ancient music, are preserved here. Additionally, due to its role on the Tea-Horse Road, the town became a cultural crossroads for the Han, Tibetan, and Bai ethnic groups, where diverse cultures collided and blended, creating a unique cultural atmosphere.
